Opening a new garage with Leo Dack and HiQ on “Your Garage”

In the latest episode of On The Ramp, Alex and Nathan are back for Episode Five, and this one is a little different. We’re visiting a brand-new garage, only two weeks into operation, and it just so happens to belong to a familiar face—Leo.

From Body Shop to Full-Service Garage

Leo’s new workshop isn’t just another garage—it’s a transformation project. Originally a body shop, the unit was too good to let go, so Leo decided to turn it into a fully operational service and repair centre. With a solid plan and a strong network, the team managed to complete the conversion in just six weeks, proving that the right preparation can make all the difference.

Assembling the Right Team

One of the biggest challenges of starting a new garage is getting the team in place. Leo emphasises that hiring the right manager first was key. Enter Lukas, the branch manager, who comes with years of experience, including a nine-year stint at Mercedes.

Starting with two technicians, the team has already expanded to three. Having the right people in place from the beginning ensures a smooth start and keeps customers happy from day one.

Marketing Without SEO? https://synergylincoln.co.uk/

Attracting new customers is always a challenge, but Leo has taken a more traditional route. Instead of focusing on SEO and pay-per-click ads, the team has relied on leafleting and Facebook to spread the word locally. The logic? When customers search for ‘car servicing’ online, they’re bombarded with options, making it difficult to stand out. By going straight to the local community, they’re making a more direct impact.

The Workshop Setup – Built for Success

Walking into the workshop, it’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into the layout. The garage features five ramps, including a Class 7 bay for larger vehicles. While commercial work isn’t a core focus, the setup allows them to take on fleet jobs when needed.

From a financial perspective, setting up a garage from scratch isn’t cheap. The equipment alone came in at around £170,000, including groundworks and electrics. On top of that, an additional £45,000 was spent on fitting out the office, signage, and marketing. To manage cash flow effectively, the majority of the equipment was financed, with repayments structured to keep operations profitable from the outset.

A Strong Partnership – The Role of HiQ

To help establish the business, Leo has partnered with HiQ, a recognised franchise in the industry. This collaboration provides valuable brand recognition, access to training, and marketing support. Customers see HiQ’s Trustpilot rating and established reputation, which immediately builds confidence in the new site.

Manager Insights – Lukas’ Move from Dealer to Independent

A standout moment in the episode is when we chat with Lukas about his transition from the dealership world to an independent garage. Having spent nearly a decade with Mercedes, Lukas talks about the difference in customer interaction and technical challenges. Unlike at a main dealer, where software updates and warranty work are the norm, an independent garage requires technicians to be far more hands-on.

As a manager, Lukas is already making a difference, ensuring customers receive a high standard of service while keeping the workshop running smoothly.

The Bigger Picture – A Mentorship Programme in the Making

Leo isn’t just focused on his own business; he’s keen to help others in the trade too. He’s launching a mentorship programme to guide aspiring garage owners through the process of setting up and running a successful business. By documenting the garage’s progress each month, Leo plans to share insights into key performance indicators, customer growth, and lessons learned along the way.

For anyone considering opening their own garage, this is an invaluable opportunity to get a real-world look at what it takes to succeed.

Looking Ahead

In just six weeks, Leo’s garage has gone from an empty unit to a fully operational site with a growing customer base. But the hard work doesn’t stop here. Over the next few months, the team will be focusing on increasing customer retention, fine-tuning operations, and making sure the workshop runs as efficiently as possible.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Leo’s journey and checking in as the business develops. If the first two weeks are anything to go by, this is set to be a real success story.
