Inside Kerr’s Tyres: How a Northern Irish Garage Group Is Redefining the Independent Automotive Trade

When most people think of independent garages, they imagine small local workshops with a few ramps, a kettle on the go, and a steady stream of loyal customers.
But in Northern Ireland, one business is rewriting that picture.

Kerr’s Tyres, a 27-site operation that’s become one of the most ambitious and fast-growing independent garage networks in the UK and Ireland.

In this episode of Your Garage, we travelled to Northern Ireland to meet the Kerr’s team, explore their superstores, and speak with founder Norman Kerr about the company’s journey from a single tyre shop to a multi-branch automotive powerhouse.

From Tyres to Full-Service Superstores

Kerr’s began life as a tyre business, but as customer needs evolved, so did the company.
Today, each site offers a complete mechanical, servicing, and repair solution alongside tyre fitting. Many branches now operate on a 50/50 split between tyres and general workshop work.

What makes their setup unique is the superstore model, vast, purpose-built sites with up to 16 ramps, EV bays, detailing areas, and even specialist spaces for performance vehicles. Every workshop is meticulously planned for maximum space efficiency, with staggered ramps and clean, modern finishes.

Scaling a Garage Network the Smart Way

Rapid expansion doesn’t happen by chance. Kerr’s now operates 27 points of sale across Northern Ireland, with the ability to rebrand and relaunch a newly acquired site over a single weekend.
Their process is slick: Friday acquisition, weekend refurbishment, and Monday reopening under the Kerr’s Tyres name.

Every new location follows the same blueprint, identical branding, layout, and equipment; much like a McDonald’s or Costa Coffee franchise. This creates instant familiarity and consistency across all sites, something rarely seen in the independent trade.

Adapting for the EV Future

Kerr’s has invested heavily in electric vehicle servicing, from staff training to bespoke EV ramps and safety zones. Their partnership with major fleet clients, including BT Openreach, has driven this focus, as more fleet vehicles transition to electric power.

According to retail director Richard, “The traditional mechanic in an oily boiler suit doesn’t exist anymore, our people are now trained technicians and specialists.”

It’s a clear reminder that independent garages must invest in training and modernisation to stay competitive.

People, Culture and Northern Irish Hospitality

Beyond the shiny workshops and expansion numbers, what really sets Kerr’s apart is people.
The business still operates on personal connections, word of mouth, loyalty, and a culture of friendliness that’s deeply rooted in Northern Irish values.

As founder Norman Kerr puts it:

“In Northern Ireland, everyone knows everyone. If you treat customers well, they tell others. If you get something wrong, they’ll still put a hand on your shoulder and help you fix it.”

That attitude extends to their approach to marketing too. Rather than chasing online ads and automation, Kerr’s focuses on events and personal engagement; meeting customers face to face, supporting local charities, and building real relationships.

Leadership and Vision

Norman Kerr’s leadership style is grounded, data-driven, and self-aware.
He admits he’s more of a strategic thinker than a manager, and credits his senior team for delivering the day-to-day excellence that fuels the company’s growth.

He’s also refreshingly open about mistakes, like expanding too quickly before fully maximising existing sites. It’s a valuable lesson for any garage owner: grow smart, not just fast.

Kerr’s now employs over 150 people and aims to reach 200+ staff and sites within the next five years. With strong systems, brand consistency, and a people-first approach, that target seems well within reach.

Lessons for Independent Garages

Visiting Kerr’s Tyres offered a masterclass in what the modern independent garage can achieve:

  • Consistency matters: Branding, layout, and service all build customer trust.
  • Invest in people: Training and internal progression keep quality high.
  • Think long term: Use data and planning, not just instinct.
  • Stay personal: Relationships and hospitality still win in a digital world.
  • Adapt early: EV readiness and fleet support are already reshaping the trade.

Final Thoughts

Our trip to Northern Ireland was more than just a look at a successful garage business, it was a reminder that independents can scale without losing their soul.
Kerr’s Tyres proves that growth, professionalism, and community spirit can go hand in hand.

Their story is proof that the future of the independent automotive sector isn’t small… It’s smart, connected, and ambitious.
