The Journey of a Multi-Generation Garage: Lessons from Mick Shaikly of Shaikly Motor Company

In the latest episode of the On the Ramp podcast, host Alex sat down with Mick Shaikly from Shaikly Motor Company, a family-run garage with a rich history spanning generations. Mick’s story is unique in that he is not just part of a family business but the bridge between two generations—having taken over from his father and now preparing for the potential involvement of his own children.

A Passion for the Motor Trade

Mick’s journey into the motor trade began at a young age. Growing up around the garage, he developed an early interest in cars and mechanics. Despite initially working in the banking sector, Mick decided in his early twenties to leave the corporate world behind and return to his true passion—the motor trade. Starting with just his father and two apprentices, the business grew steadily into the established operation it is today.

Embracing Change and Innovation

One of the key aspects of Mick’s career is his early recognition of the importance of diagnostics (commonly referred to as diag). Understanding that the future of the motor industry lay in electronics and diagnostic work, Mick sought additional training, including a significant week with the renowned Frank Massey. This training laid the groundwork for Shaikly Motor Company to become a leader in diagnostic work, setting the business apart from many of its competitors.

Mick’s enthusiasm for diagnostics not only shaped his professional path but also propelled the business forward. By investing in continual learning and staying ahead of technological developments, Mick ensured the garage remained relevant in an ever-evolving industry.

The Challenges of a Family Business

Running a family business comes with its own unique set of challenges, and Mick’s experience is no different. As his father began stepping back from the day-to-day operations, Mick found himself managing the business as well as navigating the generational transition in leadership. One of the most important lessons Mick shared is the need to separate family from business. “Family is family, and business is business,” he stressed, underscoring the importance of maintaining clear boundaries to avoid conflict.

The transition wasn’t without its difficulties, especially when it came to defining roles, responsibilities, and ownership. Mick reflected on the strain caused by not addressing financial matters early on, which led to unnecessary stress for both him and his father. Fortunately, with the help of professional advisors, they were able to resolve these issues, leading to a healthier business structure and an improved personal relationship.

Looking to the Future

As Mick prepares for the possibility of his children taking on the business, he is clear about setting expectations early. He has already initiated discussions with his family and legal advisors to ensure the transition for the next generation is smooth. His advice to other family business owners is simple: “Sort things out early, and be transparent about expectations.”

Lessons for Other Garage Owners

Mick’s journey offers valuable insights for anyone in the motor industry or running a family business:

  1. Embrace Change: Whether it’s new technology like diagnostics or preparing for the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), staying ahead of industry trends is essential for long-term success.
  2. Clear Communication in Family Businesses: Family businesses thrive when personal and professional matters are kept separate. Honest and open communication is key to avoiding misunderstandings.
  3. Customer Profiling and Service: One of Mick’s key innovations is customer profiling. By identifying and prioritising loyal customers, he has been able to deliver a higher level of service and maintain profitability.

Final Thoughts

As Mick continues to develop Shaikly Motor Company, his story is a testament to the importance of evolving with the times, embracing new technologies, and navigating the complexities of running a family business. For garage owners and motor trade professionals alike, Mick’s journey offers both inspiration and practical advice for thriving in an ever-changing industry.
